Available in eBook for the first time ANOTHER SELF, James Lees-Milne’s delightfully funny autobiography, deals with a series of bizarre episodes from his early life, including his childhood, his army career and his work for the National Trust. It is the ideal complement to his famous diaries, which begin at the point where ANOTHER SELF ends.

This edition includes a new introduction by Michael Bloch, author of JAMES LEES-MILNE THE LIFE (also available as an eBook).

Praise for ANOTHER SELF

“What a rare delight to read a book that induces helpless laughter – fresh, funny and poignant, and a wonderful confirmation that the upper classes were (and possibly still are) barking mad… a unique treasure” – Daily Mail

“Wonderfully funny” – Daily Express

“May well be the funniest autobiography of all” - Sunday Times

Another Self eBook James LeesMilne

I'm a huge fan of James Lees-Milne, but have to admit this is a strange book. My advice to the reader is: take nothing seriously except the title. It is literally about a different self from the one occupying actual reality, a self that existed only somewhere deep inside his head. Lees-Milne did write several novels in addition to his diaries and books about the National Trust, and this book should probably be read as autobiographical fiction rather than autobiography. Lees-Milne in his diaries shows his fondness for English eccentric characters as well as their houses, and I suppose he felt the need to add some additional eccentricities to his own past. His biographer Michael Bloch concedes that many of the incidents described probably did not occur in exactly the same way they are presented here, and others are known to have happened to other people rather than Lees-Milne himself. He has framed the telling of these outrageous tales with many accurate details from his real life, but still you can't help feeling suspicious. Remember that he was friendly with the Mitford family in his youth; obviously there was an influence.
